Down in Hadlyme the ferry sits idle all winter and the hills above the landing go quiet and white. Signature Land Sculpture LLC works those cold months — plow routes, cleared entries, sand and salt on the steep pitches that run down toward the river. Snow shapes itself to this land, drifting deep in the hollows and scouring the ridgelines bare, and reading that correctly is half the skill. Clearing a drive turns out to be its own kind of shaping: banks cut square, corners opened up, a smooth surface where an hour earlier there was none. By daylight the only evidence of the storm is a white wall standing neatly at the edge of the pavement.
