The crews mow and maintain lawns until the stripes run true to the property line, keep weeds out of the beds, clear gutters, rake the spring and fall down to bare soil, and take on tree work, flower beds, retaining walls, and landscape design and installation from first sketch to last stone set. There is a particular pleasure in the finished thing — a wall that holds its bank through a wet Fairfield County spring, a bed mulched dark and edged clean, a yard that looks cared for from the road. And when winter shuts the valley down overnight, snow removal is the quiet early work: a driveway opened before the sky lightens, so the day can simply begin.
