By ten at night the streets around Rogers Park have gone quiet and orange under the lamps, and an inch of snow already sits on the parked cars. Excellent Services starts its route about then, working the hilly grid of Danbury's older neighborhoods where driveways are short, steep and stacked close together. Clearing a city block of drives takes patience and a good sense of where snow can go without blocking somebody else in. Walks are shoveled, steps opened, the plow ridge at the curb cut through so nobody has to shovel the same square twice. Morning arrives, the buses run, and nobody thinks about the night before — which is the whole idea.
