Colebrook River Lake lies in a deep notch on the West Branch of the Farmington, and the wind that funnels down it in January has an edge you can feel through canvas. Up on these ridges the snow starts sooner, falls heavier and stays longer than it does a few miles south in the valley. The work is plowing — driveways, turnarounds, long private lanes — plus shovel work on walkways and steps and sand or salt where ice sets on a north slope.
