Sandy Brook tumbles down through Algonquin State Forest in a rush of boulders and hemlock shade, and Colebrook sits above it all, high and cold and mostly trees. Summer is brief up here, so the mowing, trimming, edging and mulching happen fast and steady, with cleanups to open and close a short green season. Then winter takes over and the work turns to plowing driveways that climb, digging out walks and door steps, and sanding or salting the shaded stretches that never see midday sun. Standing at Colebrook Center after a storm, the white meetinghouse against all that snow and the drives cut open on either side, is a fine way to end a long night. Elevation makes the winters here longer than in the valley, which is simply part of the job.
