Giroux Landscaping works the ledge-and-hollow ground of Chester, Connecticut, where the Pattaconk runs down through a mill village toward the big river and the oaks of Cockaponset stand at the edge of half the back lawns in town. There is a particular pleasure in stonework set true on that stubborn valley soil — a walkway that reads straight from the door, a retaining wall that takes a hillside and simply holds it, a patio and fire pit lit while fog climbs up off the water. Between the hardscape runs the ordinary rhythm of the year: mowing and edging, aeration and fertilization, pruning, hydroseeding a bare slope until it takes green, drainage cut where runoff used to stand, brush and land cleared, leaves gathered when the ridge turns copper, the drive plowed open before the first car needs it. That work carries across Middlesex and New London counties and into parts of New Haven County — river towns and ferry landings, long gravel drives under hemlock, each yard left holding its season.
