First light comes late to the Quinnipiac valley, easing down off the traprock ridge long before it reaches the yards along West Main Street — and that is the hour the machines are already breathing in Cheshire. Strollo's Excavation works the ground itself: underground services run and buried, concrete poured for additions, paver patios and sidewalks and walls set true, material and equipment hauled in and hauled back out. There is a plain, standing satisfaction in a wall that keeps its line through a February heave, in patio joints still tight while the orchards on the north end go from blossom to bare and around again. When winter arrives the same trucks push drives clear before the town has finished its coffee; when the ground softens, the landscaping goes in over earth that was made ready for it. It is work you can walk out and stand on.
