Mixville Pond sits behind its little dam on the Mill River, and on a hot Saturday in July half of Cheshire is out there in the water. Back on the streets the mowers are running — weekly cuts, string trimming along fences and foundations, tight edging at the drives, mulch worked into the beds. Spring opens with a cleanup that gets the winter sand and grit off the turf; November closes with the leaves. Cheshire summers are humid and the grass answers fast, so the schedule matters more than anything fancy. There is real pleasure in pulling out of a yard with the clippings blown off the walk and the lines still showing behind you.
