The old canal towpath cuts straight through Cheshire, and at Lock 12 the stonework still holds the water's shape. The yards along that line get mowed, trimmed and edged week after week, from the first warm stretch in April until the last leaf is down. Add mulch in the beds, a cleanup to open the season and another to close it, and that is the working year. A straight suburban frontage is harder to finish well than it looks — the eye follows every edge, so every edge gets walked. Done right, the lawn reads as level and green as the towpath running along behind it.
