In July the hayfields off the Little River get cut twice and the yard maples near the crossroads throw shade you could park a truck in. Ninja Tree Service spends that season on maintenance — dead branches out of the old shade trees, clearance over a porch and a barn door, a crown thinned so a thunderstorm has less to shove against. When one of those storms does its work anyway, they are out pulling branches off driveways and untangling what came down along a fence line. Removals are for the trees that have quit: the split silver maple, the ash going bare by the road. It is steady, ordinary work, and it leaves a Canterbury yard looking composed on an August evening.
