By four in the morning the Quinebaug runs black between white banks, and plow lights are already moving along Route 6. Brooklyn's driveways are long out here — farm lanes, gravel curves, dooryards set well back from the road — and clearing them takes patience before the town wakes. This is snow work start to finish: plowing, shoveling walks and steps, and sanding or salting the icy places where Blackwell Brook keeps the air damp. The reward is plain and worth getting up for, a driveway opened to bare pavement and a path to the door while the fields are still untouched. Storms drop into the Quiet Corner off the hills without much warning, so the trucks stay ready from the first flakes to the last freeze of March.
