In late October the ridges west of Bristol go copper above the Pequabuck valley, and the yards along those old mill-town streets show plainly who has been tending them — a retaining wall set true, a stone patio holding its line against the slope. Country Gardens of Bristol works that terrain the whole year through: landscape design shaped to a property's own grade, hardscaping in stone, artificial turf for lawns and pet runs and putting greens, irrigation lines laid quiet underground, hydroseeding that brings bare ground back even and green. Come February the work begins before the streetlights give out, plowing and salting commercial lots and clearing sidewalks down to bare pavement. There is a steady satisfaction in all of it — a hillside that drains the way it should, a mowing line kept crisp through the flat heat of July, a lot open and dark and safe before the first car turns in.
