The saw winds down, the chipper goes quiet, and the rest is hands — rakes pulled clean across the soil, perennials set exactly where the afternoon light will find them come June. New England Landscapes LLC does tree care and removal and builds yard designs out of seasonal color, perennials, planting, and steady maintenance, in a corner of Connecticut where the salt comes in off Black Rock Harbor and the old oaks lean their weight over Bridgeport's brick and clapboard streets. There is firewood split and stacked against the cold months, and in winter there is snow removal — drives opened while the harbor is still dark, a black lane cut through white. The crews work Bridgeport, Orange, Fairfield, Westport, Trumbull, Stratford, and Milford, from the mill blocks along the Pequonnock up to the ridges north of town. What they leave behind is the good part: a crown thinned so the tree can breathe, a bed edged so cleanly the line looks drawn, a yard that will carry its season without being asked twice.
