Spring around Toby's Pond arrives as mud before it arrives as green. The frost lets go, the water comes up bright, and for a couple of weeks every lawn in Beacon Falls looks matted and sorry for itself — which is exactly when JC's Landscaping starts. Raking out the winter's debris, clearing the beds, taking the first cut, and then holding a steady rhythm as the turf thickens through May. After that it's mowing, trimming, edging and fresh mulch, week after week, with the grass height following the weather rather than a fixed rule. By the Fourth of July, a yard that got that early attention is dense and even underfoot, the sort of lawn kids run across without thinking about it. That's the measure of the work, and it's a good one.
