A February nor'easter usually shows itself over Avon at dusk: the Talcott ridge goes soft and gray, the first flakes drift past the streetlights on Old Farms Road, and within an hour the whole town is muffled. Sycamore Valley LLC watches that sky and starts early, because a storm handled at nine o'clock is a far smaller job than the same storm at four in the morning. Driveways get opened while the snow is still light, then run again once it stops; walkways are cleared by hand down to the surface and sanded so the ice that follows the thaw has nothing to grab. Nod Brook and the river bottoms hold the cold, and the wind off the ridge redrifts anything left loose, so the banks get pushed well back rather than merely pushed aside. Waking up to a clear drive on a white morning is a small, complete kind of relief — that's the whole job.
