In October the cottonwoods along the Cache la Poudre go the color of a struck match, and Eastman Park fills with the sound of dry leaves working against each other. Oasis Tree & Landscaping Services, LLC tends the smaller version of that canopy — the ash and maple and honeylocust standing over Windsor's yards. Pruning for shape and for wind, opening crowns, taking out deadwood before a wet spring snow finds it, removing what cannot be saved and grinding the stump flat. Underneath the trees the ordinary rhythm keeps on: mowing, trimming, edging, mulched beds, and cleanups at both turns of the year. A shade tree on the high plains is something somebody planted on purpose, and keeping it standing is the least anyone can do for them.
