By four o'clock most July afternoons the sky over the Sawatch has made its decision, and twenty loud minutes of rain leave the benches above West Vail steaming. Fitz Landscaping keeps the mowers moving around that rhythm, cutting the short steep yards of Intermountain and the Matterhorn streets between cells. Warm and wet at eight thousand feet means grass that grows in a hurry, so the route runs tight and the trimmer follows every rock wall, post and stair tread the deck cannot reach. Afterward the clippings come off the path and the drive, and the yard sits rinsed and even in that strange bright light a mountain storm leaves behind. It is a good thing to look back at from the truck.
