Tall Timber lives up to its name: a hillside community west of Boulder where Sugarloaf Road climbs out of Boulder Canyon through dense stands of pine and fir. Altitude Landscapes tends the lawns that sit in clearings among those trees, patches of green that have to push through thin soil, broken granite and canopy shade to grow at all. Late spring is when it all wakes up, the grass greening fast in the lengthening mountain days while Boulder Creek runs loud with snowmelt down in the canyon. Mowing, trimming and seasonal cleanup give each yard a sense of intention against the wildness all around it. The result is a small, composed square of lawn at better than 6,400 feet, with the forest left gloriously wild at its edges.
