In Old Town Steamboat Springs the lots are small and squared up to the street, with Butcherknife Creek slipping along behind the back fences. Green Scenes takes care of these yards the way they ask to be taken care of — mowed on time, trimmed along alley posts and picket lines, edges cut clean where lawn meets sidewalk. Evening is the best of it, mid-August, the cut lines still showing and the smell of it hanging over the block. Spring cleanups pull winter's grit and sand out of the grass; fall cleanups clear the leaves before the first heavy wet snow flattens them into the turf. Small yards, done right, are what makes a neighborhood look loved.
