In October the geese come over Severance in long ragged strings, headed for the reservoirs, and the whole of Weld County seems to be putting itself away for the year. We work both halves of that turn: mowing, trimming and edging through the growing months, then plowing drives and shoveling walks once the fields go bare and the wind gets teeth. The plains here run flat to the west until the range stops them, which means a storm is visible a long while before it arrives — and we are staged before it does. Our standard is the same in either season: a lawn cut evenly with clean borders, or a driveway opened corner to corner with the banks set back. Small farm town, straightforward work, done when it is supposed to be done.
