The river this outfit is named for runs green and cold along the east edge of town, and come winter every yard and lot beside it needs opening before anyone can work. Arkansas Valley Roll-Off, a hauling business out of Salida, takes on snow removal when the valley goes white — plowing lots, clearing gates and access lanes, banking snow where it won't blind a turn. Snow here falls dry and light and travels on the west wind, so a lot cleared at noon can ask for another pass by dusk. That is the trade: keep the ground moving, and everything standing on it can move too. Work runs through Salida, Poncha Springs, Howard and the corridor along Highway 50.
