The shoulder seasons are the interesting ones along the hogback: an October storm that drops a foot on ground still warm, or a wet May system that arrives when nobody has a shovel out anymore. We plow through both — gravel lanes and paved drives alike, with the blade set to take the snow and leave the roadbase where it belongs. Around Roxborough Park the ground rolls and folds, and a lane can run three different grades between the mailbox and the garage, so each one gets handled on its own terms. We clear the walks, open the parking areas and set the piles where meltwater will run off instead of back across the drive. When the last of it goes, the lane should look exactly as it did in September, only wetter.
