The first real mow of the year in Rocky Ford arrives the week the valley turns from tan to green almost overnight, the buffalo grass on the edges waking up a little behind the watered yards. We start the season with a low, careful pass to clear the winter thatch, then settle into a schedule of mowing, string trimming and edging that keeps a lawn honest all summer. The Arkansas Valley sun is unforgiving by July, so we work early and cut at a height that lets the turf hold its own moisture. In October we sweep up the last of the cottonwood leaves and leave the yard flat, tidy and ready to sleep. A trimmed line along a sidewalk is a small thing, but it is the difference between a lot and a home.
