North of Rifle, Highway 13 climbs out of the valley toward Meeker and the country opens up — sage, snow fence, and sightlines that run for miles. Aspen Plow Company handles snow removal for the places spread along that grade and for yards back down in town. A plow route is a kind of map redrawn every night: where the drifts set, which turnarounds hold ice, which gate has to be opened with a shovel and a little patience. What they are after is the moment somebody backs out at six in the morning without thinking about it once. That is the entire point of the work.
