Storms come over the Dallas Divide and slide down into Ridgway with the whole Sneffels wall standing behind them, and by four in the morning the valley is white and completely still. Allison Construction is out in that hour plowing drives and lots, pushing back the berm the county grader leaves across every entrance, scraping walks down to bare concrete. Sand and ice treatment go on the north sides, where a building's shadow keeps a slick spot alive all winter. The measure of a good night is simple — headlights leaving on schedule and nobody spinning at the end of their own driveway. At seven thousand feet that holds true from the first November squall clear through April.
