The western sky at the end of a winter afternoon is the reason people in Pueblo West stop what they are doing: Greenhorn Mountain goes violet and the whole Wet Mountain front catches fire for a few minutes. WESTERN SKY LANDSCAPE watches that horizon for a different reason, since it is where the storms gather before they slide down onto the valley. Plowing driveways and lots, shoveling walks and steps, salting the shaded runs — the work begins when the front arrives and ends before the neighborhood does. Snow out here is dry enough to blow and heavy enough to matter, and a drive cleared down to the pavement stays clear all day. It is a small kindness delivered in the dark, and it is the whole reason to be out in it.
