In December the light goes low and copper along the levee, and the painted wall by the river holds it about twenty minutes before the cold settles in for real. T&M Landscaping is usually elsewhere by then, opening a drive with the plow or breaking a walk loose with a shovel somewhere across Pueblo while the snow is still fresh enough to move. Snow in this valley is light, quick and full of tricks: it blows back into the same spot twice, and it freezes hardest where a downspout drains. Clearing to the concrete rather than merely to the eye is the difference between one visit and three. Come morning the drive is open and the day belongs to whoever lives there.
