Where Platteville's streets give out into corrals, beet ground and pivot tracks, the evening wind comes down off the Front Range and cools the whole plain at once. Cowboy lawn care times its rounds to that hour, mowing and trimming while the light stretches long and gold across the fields east of town. Fence lines, gate posts and the strip along a gravel drive get the string trimmer, because that is where a yard out here either looks finished or does not. The season opens with a cleanup and closes with one, everything hauled off so the turf goes into winter bare and even. Big sky, small town, a cut lawn holding its own against the open country around it.
