Twenty Mile Road takes its name from a stagecoach stop, back when Parker was one house and a long day's ride from anywhere else. The route runs through subdivisions now, and Hughes Landscaping Inc works its way along them on cold-bright autumn mornings, breath showing, the mower still cutting. Mowing, string trimming, edging and seasonal cleanups make up the week, done to the same standard whether a yard faces the street or hides behind a fence. Colorado's growing season is short and bracketed by weather that does not ask permission, so the whole trade runs on timing. A tidy lawn on a frosty morning is a plain, satisfying thing to leave behind you.
