On a clear January night the cold here has a taste to it, and woodsmoke hangs low over the rooftops until morning. Mongo's Wood & Plow runs the plow through those nights around Pagosa Springs, opening driveways, parking areas and walks so the day can start on time. Storms come down out of the Turkey Springs country and unload over town without much warning at all. There is a rhythm to the work — push, back, push, turn — and by the time the eastern sky goes gray the route is finished. Buried at midnight, open by dawn: that is the shape of the night.
