Oak Creek was built by coal miners, its houses climbing the hillsides above the creek that gave the town its name, and winter in this corner of Routt County is long, deep and serious. Hopper Excavation is an excavating business that turns to snow removal when the storms pour over the ridges, clearing driveways and parking areas so the town keeps moving through the heaviest months. By March the banks can stand taller than a pickup, and opening a buried drive on a steep Oak Creek grade takes muscle and care. There is honest satisfaction in a hillside driveway scraped down to the ground, a straight shot to the street, and the old mining town glittering under a clear sky once the storm has passed.
