Every March the sandhill cranes come down onto the fields around Monte Vista, and the whole valley tilts its head to listen. Not long after, the grass wakes up too, and Bufurgo's LLC starts the year's first cleanups — raking out winter, clearing beds, cutting the season's opening lines into lawns that have been brown since October. From there it is steady mowing, trimming and edging until frost calls time. The San Luis Valley gives a narrow window and it is worth using well; a yard here can go from gray to green in a matter of weeks. Having a hand in that turn is the good part of the job.
