In December the sun doesn't clear Battle Mountain until well into the morning, so Minturn spends its early hours in blue shadow with the Eagle River steaming alongside the road. Christmas By Masked Man is out in it, plowing the narrow drives that step up off Main Street, shoveling stairs and decks, clearing the pitched approaches a valley town builds because there's nowhere flat to put them. Snow stacks deep in this canyon, and it has to be pushed somewhere it won't slide back. Getting a steep drive open before the first car needs it is a genuinely satisfying way to start a day. Minturn and the neighboring Eagle River communities toward Red Cliff, Avon and Vail are all served.
