The Mancos Valley runs green between the mesa country and the La Plata Mountains — hay meadows, cottonwood bottoms, and a river that keeps its head down. Nelly's Tree Service works the ranch yards and the brick-street blocks in town, trimming limbs off barn roofs and driveways, pruning the old orchard trees that came with the place, and taking down cottonwoods that finally leaned too far. Storms drop off the mountains in late summer and leave the valley picking up branches for a week afterward. First frost turns the whole bottom yellow all at once. A tree pruned right holds its shape through the winter, standing against the snow up on the La Platas.
