Most of Laporte sleeps straight through the part that matters. At two in the morning the snow is still coming down sideways, Highway 287 is two dark ruts under the streetlights, and RayMaintenance LLP is out in it — plowing driveways and lots, opening walkways, and cutting through the hard ridge the county plow leaves across the end of every drive. That berm is the difference between a normal Tuesday and a shovel and a sore back. Work the night right and by seven the town simply functions: cars back out, kids get to the bus, and the whole storm looks like something that happened to somebody else. Snow removal done properly leaves no evidence at all, which is exactly the point.
