The storms that give Laporte trouble come up from the northeast, wet and heavy and in no hurry, stacking a foot of weight on ground that was dust two days before. Fuller Excavating meets that with machinery: plowing and pushing snow off driveways, lanes, yards and lots, cutting open turnarounds, and stacking the banks back where they belong so the next storm still has somewhere to go. Out on the acreages a drive can run two hundred yards to the county road, and until it's cut, nothing at all moves. So the work happens early, in headlights and diesel steam, while the valley is still one unbroken sheet of white. The payoff is a March morning gone that scrubbed Colorado blue, with the whole property passable before the melt turns it all to soup.
