Snow reaches Idaho Springs late in the storm and leaves last, sliding down the canyon with I-70 and settling hardest on the switchback roads that climb out of town toward Virginia Canyon. Glacier Plow runs those nights — plowing steep driveways, clearing turnarounds where there is nowhere obvious to put the pile, shoveling stairs cut into the hillside, and sanding grades a truck will not hold without help. Mountain plowing is as much geometry as horsepower; decide wrong about where the snow goes in December and you live with it until April. The good part is the headlight view at three in the morning, one clean lane behind you and the whole dark canyon gone quiet. Then the next drive, and the one above that.
