Come autumn, black bears drift down the gulches out of the Rampart Range and work the edges of Highlands Ranch as if the town were a late-season orchard. THE BEARS OF THE ROCKIES takes its name from that country and its appetite for the heavy end of yard work: mowing wide lots, edging long runs of concrete, string trimming the tangled corners, and hauling out everything a season leaves behind. Fall cleanups are the big ones, when cottonwood and ash can bury a lawn inside a week. Spring gets the same treatment in reverse, opening the yard back up for growth.
