Storms arrive in Glenwood Springs down the canyon, funneled along the Colorado with the wind behind them, and they can drop a foot on Red Mountain while the valley floor is still making up its mind. LRS: Landscape, Rescue, Snow works the night side of that — plowing driveways and lots, cutting the banks back at the road, shoveling the steps and walks a blade will never reach. Steep pitches and hairpin drives are the local specialty, and they take patience: push, back, push again, then treat the shaded turn where meltwater runs across at dusk and freezes solid by ten. There is a particular quiet at three in the morning up on the benches, engine idling, everything falling. By the time the town wakes, the way out is already open.
