Glenwood Springs is built where the Roaring Fork hands itself over to the Colorado, and the canyon walls above town keep their own hours of shade and sun. Aspen Arborist tends the cottonwoods and spruce on those narrow river benches — pruning for shape and light, reading a canopy for the thinning that says something has gone wrong underneath, and taking down what rockfall and hard winters have finished. In February, when steam drifts off the water and frost outlines every twig, the shape left in a tree is the whole picture. Come June the river runs loud and green climbs the flank of Red Mountain, and a crown opened up in the cold breathes all summer long. It is close work, high in the branches above a town that never quite stops sounding like moving water.
