Storms come down the Ten Mile Canyon before anyone in Frisco is awake, riding the westerly off Vail Pass and stacking against the range until the town finds a foot of snow it did not have at bedtime. Alpine Snowworks is out ahead of that, headlights swinging through blowing powder, plowing driveways and cutting back the berm the county plow left across a gate. Walks get shoveled down to the concrete, steps cleared, ice knocked off the north-facing entries that never see sun from November to March. Winter up here runs long — October into May in a good year — so the work is an arrangement for a whole season rather than a single visit. By the time the sky goes grey over Peak One, the drive is open and the day starts on time.
