The heaviest snow in Fountain rarely comes in December — it comes in March, wet and sudden, heavy enough to bow the branches over the older streets and turn a driveway into a morning's whole problem. Monumental Limited works the hours before the light, when the town is still and the only sound is a blade coming down on concrete. The job is snow removal, plain and complete: driveways opened end to end, walks cut down to the bare surface, ice broken up where it packs at the bottom of the drive. There is a satisfaction in a clean strip of pavement at six in the morning, steam lifting off it as the sun comes up and starts doing its half of the work. By the time the coffee is poured, the car can back out. That is the entire idea.
