D & J Snow Plowing is out in the small hours, headlights swinging across drifted gravel drives while the town is still dark. Mountain plowing is mostly about knowing the property — where the culvert edge hides, which turn needs the pile stacked downhill so the next storm still has somewhere to go. They clear the drive, cut the walkway down to bare footing, and treat the ice that forms where the sun never reaches. Waking up to an open driveway and a path to the door is a small mercy, and it is the whole point of the night.
