March is the month that really snows here — wet, heavy, dropped overnight in a foot that bends the elms along Big Dry Creek and is gone from the sunny side of the street by Thursday. snowscape works the middle of that night, headlights and amber strobes moving down streets nobody else is on, plowing driveways and lots, shoveling by hand where a blade cannot fit, salting the shaded north-facing steps where meltwater runs and freezes again. By the time the foothills catch the first sun, the routes are done and the trucks are heading back through a town that never saw them. There is something plain and good about handing a street back to the people who live on it, opened and passable, before they have even looked out the window. Snow work for Englewood and the towns along its borders.
