By the second week of October the scrub oak on Bellyache Ridge has gone rust and copper, and the grass down in Edwards stops asking for much. This is the season Chards Yards Inc. is built for: the last cut of the year taken low, aeration cores pulled from soil that spent all summer packed hard, seed and a fall feeding worked in so the roots have something to hold through six months of white. Beds get raked out, corners squared, the whole property handed over to winter in order. There is a plain pleasure in walking off a lawn in October already knowing how it will look the following June. Whatever spring gives back up here was earned in the fall.
