There is a week most Octobers when the cottonwoods and maples give up all at once, the yards go gold and ankle deep, and then a wet snow arrives on top of it before anyone has raked. Green Works Lawn and Leaf runs straight at that week, leaf removal and fall cleanup on one side, plowing and shoveling on the other, sometimes both before dark. The green season is mowing, trimming, edging and bed work on a steady weekly turn; the cold season is driveways opened, walks cleared to the step, and ice melt along the shaded runs. Nothing about the calendar here is tidy, so the work has to be. A clean lawn in October and a clear drive in January come out of the same habit.
