On East Third Avenue the old houses stand shoulder to shoulder behind lawns the size of a good rug, and a Saturday morning there sounds like mowers and the far-off whistle of the narrow gauge pulling out of the depot. Mow Durango cuts those yards and the wider ones out toward Three Springs — mowing, string trimming, edging along walks, clearing the clippings so the strip between sidewalk and street looks intentional. June in this valley is generous: the days run long, the cottonwoods are full, and grass cut on Friday is asking again by Tuesday. When December closes in, the trucks come back with plows and shovels to open driveways and clear the paths the mail carrier uses. A town this walkable deserves attention in both directions.
