Durango sits at 6,500 feet on the dry shoulder of the San Juans, where green is something a place earns rather than inherits. Mountain Oasis, Inc. keeps lawns around town and out over Florida Mesa in that earned green — mowed, trimmed, edged clean, tended through the long light of a high-desert July. The late-summer monsoon builds over the La Platas most afternoons and drops its twenty loud minutes, and the grass answers overnight. Then the year turns, the Gambel oak goes rust along the fence lines, and those same addresses need snow moved off drives and walks before the first car of the morning. It is one job in two weathers, and both of them are worth doing carefully.
