In the white half it means plow blades and shovels — driveways opened before breakfast, walks scraped down clean, ice melt on shaded steps that won't see bare stone again until May. The turn between the two happens fast up here; there are Septembers with frost on the mower deck. Same yards, same hands, whichever way the year is pointing.
