In March the sandhill cranes come through Delta County by the thousand, circling over Fruitgrowers Reservoir and calling in that rattling voice that means the year has turned. Ramsay Lawn and Landscape Services hears it as a changeover — shovels put away, mowers and trimmers pulled out and tuned. From then until the leaves drop it is steady lawn work: even cuts and squared borders on yards all over town. Then the cranes go back the other way in the fall, the trucks change over again, and the work becomes clearing drives, walks and entries through the cold. Two halves of a life spent outdoors in one valley, and neither half is the boring one.
